They obviously haven’t watched Boston Legal. I just finished Word Salad Days and by god, the way he delivers lines? How he shows pride and vulnerability when his Alzheimer’s is brought into the light, all in one breath?

The man won an Emmy for his work on this show. He deserved one during Star Trek too. Yes, he hams it up in a lot of roles. He overacts a LOT. But tell me he’s not damn entertaining to watch? And if you really, really watch Star Trek, you see the great actor there. Remember when Edith was killed? Kirk doesn’t say a word. He doesn’t flail, doesn’t sob, he just shuts his eyes tight, goes into a corner, and bites his fist, but damn you know he’s torn apart inside. And oh yeah, when Spock dies? Motherfucker BRINGS IT. He doesn’t scream SPOOOCCCKKK like he did KHAAAANNNN, nope. He just slides wordlessly to the floor, staring blankly at the walls, because that’s how people behave when someone they care about most in the world dies. They are shocked to their core, and the tears come a little later when they start believing that it’s all really happening.

THAT is good acting, and so I hate it when people call him a bad actor or use his acting skills as a punchline. “Hey look, this random actor’s acting has gone Shatner.” There needs to be a movement to end that comparison. Let’s use an actual bad actor, like Kristin Stewart or Keanu Reeves. Give me Shatner being the hammiest of hams over these two people who make watching paint dry an Olympic sport.

Look at that face. I adore his acting! WHY do people mock him?? Don’t they understand anything about acting? There is not just one fucking style that everyone has to use, or they’re a bad actor or an overactor or whatever the hell. He is (and was) awesome and anyone who can’t see that he oozes talent, charisma, and COURAGE has questionable observational skills at best. I don’t care what he thought of Star Trek while they were filming, or whether or not he got along with the other cast members. That is none of my business. He made Captain Kirk, and without him the show would have been a boring pile of mush. (Also, Leonard Nimoy. He was another totally essential element. They got supremely lucky with the combination of talented people they ended up with.)

It takes a special kind of person to bring that intensity to a role. I totally respect him, because people will know about his acting style and his manner of speaking long after we are both dead. Kirk is iconic now—one of the best known people on the planet. EVER. If aliens initiate contact with earth in 200 years, he will still be a part of our cultural lexicon. SO SUCK ON THAT, SHAT HATERS.
