My list of fandoms is like a roll call by now, but a few of them are Star Trek, Avengers, Lord of the Rings, Hannibal, Supernatural, and honestly almost anything could appear on here, even het.

Look at the first episode of Smallville and now look at the finale. Smallville was interesting because Superman doesn’t have all his powers yet. There’s new characters that we haven’t seen around, and best of all, Lex Luthor doesn’t start off as evil but as Clark Kent’s friend. The finale manages…

But that’s kind of the point of those shows, isn’t it? “Watch Superman learn how to be Superman.” “Watch Lex Luthor’s descent into evil.” “Watch Merlin become an all powerful wizard and Arthur the king of Camelot.” That’s why we tune in, ‘cause it’s a brand we know and love with a different spin, but we also know where it’s going and that’s half the fun.

I flipped the hell out at Merlin’s season three finale. NOW we’re getting to the really great parts of Arthurian legend, and I’m jazzed as fuck to see what the show keeps and what it takes liberties with. The show is already way different from the real legend, if you never anchor it in any of the original stories then you may as well not even call the characters Arthur and Merlin. It’s an origin story. We already know the ending, so the point is the journey.

Were you disappointed when Kirk was named captain of the Enterprise at the end of STXI? Of course not. Same thing here.

Not trying to fight, love, just engaging in a bit of discussion. =)

(I hate Arthur/Gwen too. It’s unfortunate they have no romantic chemistry, ‘cause we all knew it was gonna happen someday. I’m curious to see how the Arthur/Gwen/Lancelot triangle is handled though. I’m so Team Gwen/Lancelot.)

I guess it makes more sense when you put it like that and I see your point. I think what disappointed me is that by giving me the new stuff, I WANTED things to change from canon material. I was never big on Superman (prefer Batman) nor was I big on Arthurian legend. I enjoyed those stories, but I had no desire to see more of the same thing and I wanted them to go down different paths. Maybe that’s why I stopped watching Merlin in season 2 and Smallville after season 5. Though really, they didn’t promise me a new ending, but I apparently enjoy riding on trains that are about to wreck and jump tracks before it happens.

I don’t think you can compare it with Star Trek, though. I mean, we can already see how their destinies have changed. Kirk grew up without a father. Vulcan is history. Spock is dating Uhura. Of course it’s too early to tell, but I honestly think they’re going to go in a whole other direction with the characters while keeping them the same at their core. If they were to do what Smallville and Merlin did, future movies would continue to copy plots from TOS with minor differences and eventually culminate in Kirk being bested by a bridge. Start out wildly different, gradually move toward the same thing we’ve seen before.

In short, who wants Amok Time the TOS way when we can upgrade and have Kirk and Spock just fuck on the ground? Change is delicious to me. ;)

(Also I like discussion. Never apologize for disagreeing.)

I really hate it when a TV show starts on a premise of being different than canon in varying ways and ends up looking like canon all the same.

Look at the first episode of Smallville and now look at the finale. Smallville was interesting because Superman doesn’t have all his powers yet. There’s new characters that we haven’t seen around, and best of all, Lex Luthor doesn’t start off as evil but as Clark Kent’s friend. The finale manages to make it look exactly like any other comic, movie, or television series that came before it.

I believe the same thing will happen with Merlin. Look at all it had different! Merlin isn’t an old man but a boy. He must hide his magic for fear of death. Guinevere is a servant! Now look at it. Morgana is evil as planned. Arthur and Gwen are suddenly crushing on each other after only one season passes and no hints of attraction before that point. I’m half expecting Merlin to time travel and come back as an old man, right in time for Arthur to rule Camelot.

Yes, Smallville. America is the only country who is willing to do anything about that thing in the sky. No other world governments should be consulted.
