I’m looking at the e-mail submission for big bangs, and I need to know how to classify my fic. It has Kirk/Spock as well as Kirk Prime/Spock Prime, so would I make it both TOS and AOS or only AOS since it’s set in that universe?
Also, do you need to warn for character death if the character is dead through the first half of fic and then comes back to life later?
Is English really referred to as Standard in the Star Trek universe? I haven’t been able to find it on Memory Alpha and I really want to know if it’s any official language. Would the fancy name for it be Federation Standard?

There’s apparently a comment about Spock having gotten married in TNG, but that’s like decades and decades after Kirk’s death anyway.

I consulted Memory Alpha and it says that books written after STVI confirm that the wedding Picard met Sarek at was for Spock and Saavik, so this fits nicely with my preferred canon, that Saavik and Spock got married long after Kirk died. And I can’t even truly count that as canon because they’re novels. Though it’s the best idea because clearly he needs a Pon Farr buddy after Kirk’s gone.

THIS. I never understood people who clung to a pairing for years when I was always someone who, at best, obsessed for 2-3 years at most and then moved on. Man, it’s too bad season 4 was pissing me off so much at that point that I forgot how epic that was until now. Seriously, if they weren’t brothers, everyone would ship them. So basically they’re all back in the same damn week. Fail, tv. At least Psych loves me.
Let’s pretend that Kirk Prime somehow magicked himself back into existence and somehow he and Spock Prime have the choice to either stay in the alternate dimension created by red matter or go back to their own dimension. On one hand, they could stay, keep low key, fix up the Vulcan colony and I dunno, play matchmaker and mastermind leaps in technology anonymously. On the other hand, both Kirk and Spock would stop being missing in their own reality, there would still be a Vulcan, they could probably still find jobs in Starfleet, and they wouldn’t have to confuse everyone with their identity. Which decision do you think they would make?
Going through my Daria dvds, it’s funny how my attitudes have changed since I last watched the show (when I was in middle school).
Whereas I used to be like “DARIA ARE YOU ME, OR..?”, now a lot of the time I laugh and go “Oh Daria, get over yourself.”
Not that I don’t enjoy it just as much as I did when I was younger…but things I thought were important when I was 14 aren’t so much to me anymore.

This is so true. I watched it again a couple of months ago and I think my favorite episode is the one where she imagines what her future would be like, and I sort of like how even the show knew she’d get over herself because she’s much more grounded as an adult and she has a peace with her parents and her sister.
You know, I kind of wish Mycroft was Moriarty. I rewatched A Study in Pink and before it was revealed that Mycroft is actually Sherlock’s brother and basically a good guy, I actually found Mycroft convincing as a villain. He matches Sherlock’s intelligence, demonstrates his ability to elude Sherlock, and has a style that’s classy and you could easily imagine him as a cold psychopath who would kill you, wipe off the knife with an embroidered handkerchief, then walk away, umbrella slung over his shoulder like a gentleman. You know how Sherlock is outwardly cold and rude and people assume he’s a killer when he isn’t? Mycroft could have been his opposite; perfectly normal gentleman who appears kind and honest but is really a twisted killer on the inside.
Moriarty? Sure yeah, he’s smart, but he’s like a whiny douchebag. I think about half of it is the way the actor, director/writers chose to portray him, which is an annoying weasel. Seriously, “No you won’t!” in this silly sing-song voice when Sherlock is being all James Bond just made me laugh my ass off at an intense moment for all the wrong reasons. But it’s more than just that, and I think I know why. He’s the lowest common denominator of a villain, the terrorist. Terrorism is easy; anyone can strap a bomb to something and blow shit up. The guy can’t even make a graceful exit; he actually comes back just to shit with them more, ruining the tiny bit of effect he had. And you know, the fact that he needs a dozen snipers when confronting John and Sherlock just convinces me that he’s somehow the head of a terrorist group who do a lot of the spy work for him, but not in the cool, underplayed way Mycroft has people work for him. I mean, it’s threatening when it’s cameras and technology and you can’t see who’s pulling the strings. When there’s snipers and you yourself are there antagonizing the protagonist, shit’s not nearly as threatening. Yes, Moriarty can burn Sherlock’s heart out of him. But we’re going to assume that’s John, and really, the swimming pool can kill John just as well as Moriarty can. I want a villain that can tear apart Sherlock’s mind. An enemy that can use John, not just threaten his life but do shit to sow discord between them or kidnap John and make it a game for Sherlock to find him.
tl;dr, Moriarty sucks and I just pray that he either goes the hell away or it turns out that this isn’t the real Moriarty, because I’ll be so annoyed if this jackass is the recurring villain.
This is so cool if you’re wondering what a high-functioning sociopath like Sherlock Holmes is like. This is a real, anonymous girl who answers people’s questions about sociopaths and how she sees the world. It’s fucking interesting all by itself, but then it’s nice to see that the writers of the show really are writing Sherlock well.
Two parts interested me a lot in regard to Sherlock. The first is a commenter saying they are sociopath-like but are able to cry at something beautiful, and the girl says that while she doesn’t cry, she feels great emotion in seeing beautiful things and generally loves life, so it really reminded me of Sherlock looking up at the stars and claiming that he can “appreciate them.” The other part was that the person wasn’t interested in relationships because they’re basically strong emotional attachments, which she’s not capable of, so the closest she’s been to love is infatuation with interesting people. She decided that if she ever were to be with someone for life, they would constantly surprise her and have many layers to peel like an onion. Hmm, sounds familiar.
